LORETTA STATS

RECEPTION Saturday, 5.10.2019, 5 pm
Opening Angelika Kirchschlager (singer)

Loretta Stats, born 1979 in Kronstadt/Romania, studied painting and graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She lives and works in Lower Austria. She is the recipient of the Walter Koschatzky Art Prize 2011 - 1st Prize.

Her subjects are everyday life. By using different stylistic means and forms of expression she creates a complex structure which, when looking at the pictures, makes you want to dare to enter her world and take a journey of discovery.

The themes are universal as well as biographical digressions and literary experiments. Their interest is by no means in photorealistic reproduction and the conservation of known reality. She is much more interested in questioning the foundations and limits of seemingly rigid arrangements by means of a deconstruction and finally a reconstruction and condensation of things. The pictorial landscape is characterized by compressed worlds that are not visible at first glance and meticulous overlays of individual layers of images, text and color.

She herself describes her work as an activity that mutates into a struggle. It is a fight against time, against the ego, against valid patterns or habits and also against the surface of the picture. She has no consideration for the smooth and flawless canvas and lets her emotions run free to fight and process love and hate, security and self-doubt, calmness and panic using various techniques - in order to finally be able to free herself from them.

One could also understand her work as an analysis of the order of things, with elements that have not been considered before, which is represented by a changed perspective. Not a recording of time, but rather an invitation to take time in order to come to terms with the work and its own truth.
